How does Tomahawk missiles work?

To navigate a Tomahawk, the missile utilizes a combination of digital scene matching and global position system (GPS) to pursue their targets with better accuracy. The missile capture images  while flying and match them to the images prior to its flight; during mission planning.

"The missile is sending constant emails back to the controlling agency; then the controlling agency can send updated guidance via essentially a data email back to the missile" said Harmer
"if something in the terrain changes or the mission gets canceled, the people monitoring the missile can redirect it with a simple command" also said Harmer.

The missile is also programmed to loiter in an low area without dropping a bomb. In the Syria bombing hosted by the US. Navy. all 59 bombs reached one second  of another.

Tomahawk missiles are 18 feet (5.6 meters) long and carry up to 1,000 lbs warhead or 166  tiny bomblets which function as grenades. This missile can fly at a top speed of 550 mph (880 km/h).
